This is a papier-mâché mask I bought from Venezia and painted for my mom's wedding. It symbolizes the harmony and union of the opposites.One side is a woman's face on which I painted a flower and the other is a man's on which I painted a leaf. The leaf and petal connect to one another with a golden stem that traces the contours of the mask. Each face is connected by one eye in the center which reminds me of the concept of seeing with one eye. I hope my Japanese characters are somewhat accurate, but the character in the center of this piece is to represent a blessing of happiness.
