Universe Within
Poetry

We live -

our fleshy walls are not solid but

porous orange peels -

the strong scent of existence seeping through.

Constraints of metal, scripture, sound vibrations

Die

where our voice thrives like dandelions

under the moist droplets of energy that

feed us like

Color.

Time, Thick as its dust,

is abundant,

Never to end

Always to harvest

Realization.

In this world of stone and water

we live in separate bodies

we speak with different tongues

as the pure language that ticks within

our weakening muscles

Strengthens -

Our bodies are redeemed for the

Universe within.

Artist's Statement

Ever since childhood, I’ve been in awe of nature; stones, plants, the ocean, and the sky. Although subconscious at first, I was always intrigued by the balance that is formed in the opposition of nature’s elements. I seek these contradictions in people and document evolution of identity through examining the balance between contrasting elements in the human psyche.

We exist on the same planet, living in separate bodies and speaking in different languages. Although we share this world, each of us has within us our own gardens to be explored and discovered. Like plants, we are nurtured by the soil of our own experiences; we grow from a seed, our roots are nourished, we bloom and survive through the changing of the seasons. Our internal gardens are unique to us all, they are multi-faceted – filled with opposing concepts that come together to form unity.

I analyze the complexity of these tensions to bring nebulous feelings and impressions into focus. Pouring color on the canvas and mixing elements of the female figure with decorative plant textures, I give tangibility to the ethereal fragments of self. My work merges the surreal with reality and acts as visual poetry – portraying emotions, anecdotes, and colorful epiphanies as I discover them. “Soil to Mature” represents my own garden and illustrates the internal voyage through the different chapters in my life – painful, joyful and, overall, formative.
